Searching for the abortion pill in Korea produces two kinds of result: pages explaining how it works elsewhere, and websites offering to post it to you. Neither explains the actual situation here, and the gap between them is where people end up taking real risks.

There is a specific reason this search is confusing. Most of what you find describes a medication pathway that is routine in other countries, and then the practical instructions do not apply here. What fills that gap is websites selling pills by post.

This page is about the difference between those two things.

What is and is not available here

The medication approach used in many countries combines two drugs taken a day or two apart. That combination is not licensed for this use in Korea, which means it is not something a pharmacy dispenses or a prescription obtains.

That is a regulatory position, not a statement about whether care exists. Care is available — our guide to abortion care in Korea covers how the legal situation stands and how a consultation works. What is not available is the pharmacy route that you may have used, or expected to use, somewhere else.

Why people end up ordering online, and what that actually carries

The appeal is obvious: it is private, it requires no appointment, and it does not involve explaining yourself in a second language. Those are real reasons, and they deserve a straight answer rather than a lecture.

Here is the straight answer. Ordering pills online carries three separate problems, and they are not equally serious.

You do not know what is in the package. Medication bought from an unregulated seller has no guarantee of contents, dose or authenticity. It may be the right drug, the wrong drug, the right drug at the wrong strength, or nothing active at all.

You do not know the correct regimen for your situation. The dose and the approach differ depending on how many weeks along you are, and that figure is often not what people estimate it to be.

Nobody has confirmed where the pregnancy is. This is the one that matters.

The ectopic problem

A pregnancy can implant outside the uterus, most often in a fallopian tube. It cannot continue there, and it is a medical emergency when it ruptures.

Medication intended to end a pregnancy inside the uterus does nothing to an ectopic pregnancy. Worse, its effects — bleeding and cramping — look exactly like what you would expect the medication to do, which means the warning signs get misread as the process working.

An ultrasound answers this in a few minutes. It is the single step that online purchase skips, and it is the reason a consultation is not bureaucracy.

What a clinic does instead

A consultation establishes three things before anything else: that you are pregnant, how far along you are, and that the pregnancy is in the uterus. Those answers determine everything that follows, and none of them can be worked out at home.

From there the options available in Korea are explained, along with what each involves and what it costs — which, as our abortion care guide covers, is generally private-pay, so asking for a written estimate at the consultation is a reasonable thing to do.

The timing point is practical rather than a pressure tactic: earlier generally means simpler options and quicker recovery. That is also the reason not to spend two weeks waiting for a package to arrive.

If you have already taken something

This is worth saying clearly, because people in this position often avoid a doctor out of embarrassment.

Get checked, and do not wait for things to worsen. A doctor's job here is to find out whether the pregnancy has ended completely, whether it was in the uterus in the first place, and whether you need anything further. Incomplete passage is reasonably common and is straightforwardly managed once it is identified — and left alone, it causes continued bleeding and infection risk.

Go the same day if any of these apply:

Privacy

Medical consultations are confidential. If the reason you were looking for something you could manage alone was privacy rather than convenience, that is worth saying out loud at the appointment — a clinic used to international patients will understand the concern and can explain exactly who sees what.

Saying it in Korean

KoreanMeaning
임신 중절 상담 받고 싶어요I would like a consultation about ending a pregnancy
약을 먹었는데 확인하고 싶어요I took medication and want it checked
피가 계속 나와요I am still bleeding
비밀 보장되나요?Is this kept confidential?

Being seen in English

The hardest part of this is usually starting the conversation, and doing that in a language you are still learning makes an already difficult moment harder. That difficulty is exactly what pushes people toward a package in the post.

At Yoonho the consultation is handled in English, including the questions people find hardest to ask. See our clinics, read our guide to abortion care in Korea, or message us on WhatsApp or KakaoTalk.

Common questions

Can I get the abortion pill at a pharmacy in Korea?

No. The medication combination used for this in other countries is not licensed for that use in Korea, so it is not dispensed through pharmacies here. That is a regulatory situation rather than a statement about whether care is available — in-clinic care is.

What is actually wrong with ordering it online?

Three things: you do not know what is in the package, you do not know the correct dose for how far along you are, and nobody has confirmed the pregnancy is in the uterus. The last one is the serious one — pills do nothing for an ectopic pregnancy, which can be life-threatening if it is missed.

What is an ectopic pregnancy and why does it matter here?

It is a pregnancy that has implanted outside the uterus. It cannot continue, it is not treated by medication intended to end a pregnancy in the uterus, and it needs urgent care of a different kind. An ultrasound settles the question in minutes, and it is the step that ordering online skips entirely.

I already took pills I bought online. What should I do?

See a doctor, and do not wait for symptoms to get worse. Bleeding that soaks a pad an hour for several hours, a fever, severe pain or feeling faint are reasons to go the same day. You will not be judged for it, and a check confirms whether the pregnancy has ended completely.

Will the clinic tell anyone?

Your consultation is confidential, in the same way as any other medical visit. If privacy is the reason you were looking for something you could do alone, say so at the appointment — it is a common concern and a reasonable one to raise directly.
